AWAKE BBL + BODY CONTOURING

Shape the waist, hips, and buttocks as one personalized plan.

A BBL combines liposuction of selected donor areas with fat transfer to the buttocks and hips. The plan considers your waist, flanks, hips, and buttock contour together so the donor areas remain balanced and the result fits your overall proportions.

Your consultation starts with the shape you want to create and the changes that may suit your body. Dr. Farrugia will evaluate donor fat, buttock anatomy, skin and tissue quality, weight stability, and your health to discuss what may be realistic, whether staging could help, or whether another approach would fit better.

BBL at a glance

Donor contour

Liposuction can define selected donor areas while supplying fat for transfer. Those areas are planned for their own balanced, proportionate contour.

Recipient shape

Transferred fat may create fuller buttock contour, smoother hip transitions, or better balance with the waist. The amount of change is individualized, and retained volume varies.

Safety planning

BBL has procedure-specific risks, including fat embolism. Your consultation includes a direct review of technique, facility readiness, individual risk factors, and the safeguards that apply to your plan.

One coordinated plan for two treatment areas

Your BBL plan coordinates two kinds of change: contouring the donor areas and adding shape to the buttocks and hips. Because each area heals differently, your written recovery plan will address garments, positioning, pressure, movement, wound care, and follow-up for both.

  • Donor areas must be chosen for contouring suitability and available fat.
  • The recipient plan is constrained by anatomy and the amount of change that can be pursued responsibly.
  • Early swelling does not define the later contour.
  • Recovery instructions must be individualized across all treated areas.

Could BBL fit your goals?

BBL may be worth discussing if you have suitable donor fat, a stable weight, realistic shape goals, and the ability to follow a two-area recovery and follow-up plan.

  • The desired change is about proportion and contour rather than weight loss.
  • You have enough suitable donor fat to support the plan without over-treating the harvest areas.
  • Your health history, medications, nicotine exposure, clot risk, and prior operations can be reviewed and planned for appropriately.
  • You understand that retained volume and symmetry vary, and that staging or revision may sometimes be discussed.
  • You are prepared to review the procedure-specific serious risks and alternatives, including no surgery.

Choosing the right contouring approach

BBL combines donor-area liposuction with fat transfer, but not every contour goal needs both. Your consultation compares the options based on the change you want, your anatomy, and your recovery priorities.

Standalone liposuction

Liposuction removes fat and reshapes donor areas. A BBL adds fat preparation, buttock placement, a second recovery zone, and additional procedure-specific risk.

Breast or hand transfer

Breast and hand fat transfer have different recipient anatomy, goals, limitations, follow-up, and risk discussions. Their claims and recovery plans do not transfer to a BBL.

Implants or fillers

Buttock implants and injectable products use different materials and planning pathways. Their availability, maintenance, limitations, and risks require separate evaluation.

Weight loss or exercise

A BBL is not a weight-loss treatment and cannot promise a body type. Weight change, muscle development, skin quality, and skeletal proportions continue to affect shape.

For adjacent context, review liposuction options, breast fat transfer, or hand fat transfer.

Planning a result that fits your proportions

Your donor fat, buttock dimensions, hip contour, skin and tissue quality, asymmetry, and overall proportions all influence the plan. The best approach may prioritize balance over size or use staging when a larger change would not be appropriate in one operation.

Fat retention and healing vary. Some transferred volume may not contribute to the later contour, and weight change can continue to affect shape. Your plan will focus on a realistic improvement in proportion without promising a specific volume, retention figure, duration, or final shape.

Your awake BBL experience and safety plan

BodyLuxe performs BBL with tumescent local anesthesia so you remain awake and able to communicate with Dr. Farrugia. Fat is placed only in the subcutaneous tissue above the gluteal muscle. Patient selection, facility readiness, technique, emergency capability, and follow-up remain essential parts of the safety plan.

Staying awake provides real-time pain and muscle-response feedback if the cannula approaches deeper tissue. A small, noncomparative 2018 Level IV case series described this feedback as an additional procedural safeguard. It does not prove that awake BBL eliminates fat-embolism risk or is safer for every patient.

  • Dr. Farrugia performs the surgery and will review the credentials and facility standards that apply to your plan.
  • Your consultation also covers where the operation occurs and how unexpected events are handled.
  • Fat is placed only in subcutaneous tissue above the gluteal muscle.
  • Your individual plan also considers clot, anesthesia, medication, nicotine, and travel risks.

Recovery across harvest and transfer sites

Swelling, bruising, soreness, firmness, drainage from access sites, temporary sensory changes, asymmetry, and changes in mobility can occur. The donor and recipient areas may settle at different rates.

Your written surgical plan sets pressure and activity instructions, including sitting, sleep position, garments, travel, return to work, and exercise.

  • Arrange help based on your work, caregiving, travel, and movement demands.
  • Follow the distinct wound-care and garment instructions for every treated area.
  • Know which symptoms require urgent assessment and how to reach the clinical team.
  • Keep follow-up appointments so both donor contours and buttock healing can be evaluated.

Understanding risks before you decide

BBL risks can include fat embolism, blood clots and pulmonary complications, bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, fat necrosis, asymmetry, contour irregularity, changes in sensation, pain, skin injury, poor wound healing, scarring, anesthesia complications, the need for revision, and a result that does not meet expectations. Fat embolism can be fatal.

Your consultation is the place to review personal risk factors, the proposed operation, alternatives, and what it could mean to delay or decline surgery. This page supports that conversation but does not replace the full consent process.

What you’ll learn at your consultation

  • Which donor areas are suitable, and what contour change is expected there?
  • What buttock and hip shape change is realistic for this anatomy?
  • What limits the amount of fat that can be harvested and placed?
  • What specific safety practices, credentials, facility standards, and emergency plans apply?
  • How will recovery, pressure, activity, travel, and follow-up be individualized?
  • What alternatives, including standalone liposuction, another augmentation method, staging, or no procedure, fit the goal?
  • What does the individualized written quote include?

Frequently asked questions

How does staying awake contribute to the safety plan?

While you remain awake, pain or muscle response can alert Dr. Farrugia if the cannula approaches deeper tissue. That feedback is one part of the plan; it does not eliminate fat-embolism risk or replace patient selection, technique, facility readiness, emergency planning, and follow-up.

What kind of shape change can I expect?

Your donor supply, anatomy, placement limits, swelling, healing, and retained volume all affect the result. The plan focuses on a realistic improvement in shape and proportion without promising a measurement.

Can I choose liposuction without fat transfer?

Yes, when fat removal alone fits the goal. Liposuction creates donor-area contour; BBL adds fat preparation and placement in the buttock area, a second recovery zone, and additional risks.

How long before sitting, exercising, working, or traveling?

There is no single recovery schedule. The answer depends on the actual operation, health, travel plans, work demands, healing, and the surgeon’s current written instructions.

How is pricing handled?

No fixed BBL price is published. Donor areas, surgical scope, setting, and combined treatments affect the individualized quote. Review current pricing information and confirm what the written quote includes.

Start with the shape you want to create.

If you are considering a fuller buttock or smoother waist-to-hip contour, your consultation can clarify whether your anatomy, donor fat, health, and goals support BBL. You will leave with a personalized discussion of realistic shape, safety planning, recovery, alternatives, and the next step if you decide to move forward.
