What does “awake” actually tell you?
It means you are intended to remain responsive rather than fully unconscious under general anesthesia. You can communicate about comfort, while your exact sensations and relaxation level still depend on the medicines, treated areas and your individual response.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists explains that local anesthesia numbs a limited area while you remain alert, whereas general anesthesia causes loss of consciousness. The type used depends on the procedure, health factors, and patient preference.

How local and general anesthesia differ
Local and general anesthesia differ in consciousness, monitoring and how medication is delivered. Understanding those differences helps you ask better questions about comfort, safety and recovery.
Neither approach is the right answer for every person or every operation. Dr. Farrugia considers the planned procedure, your health and your preferences before recommending an anesthesia plan.

What awake liposuction can change and where its limits are
Awake liposuction can reshape localized subcutaneous fat, but it does not determine how much fat should be removed, guarantee a contour or create a fixed recovery timeline. It also cannot address every cause of shape or skin change.
- Subcutaneous fat can be addressed by liposuction; visceral fat inside the abdominal cavity is not removed by liposuction.
- Skin may not contract enough to match the desired contour, and loose or rippling skin can remain or become more noticeable.
- Muscle separation, hernia, skeletal structure, scar tissue, and prior procedures may affect the plan or make another approach more appropriate.
- Some concerns require a different operation, a staged plan, or no procedure.
Recovery and support
Recovery depends on the areas treated, the extent of the procedure, your healing, work and activity demands, and whether another procedure is performed.
Before surgery, we review transportation, help at home, wound and garment care, activity, work, follow-up and warning signs. Your written instructions will give you a more useful timeline than a generic estimate online.
Swelling and healing continue after the first days of recovery. During consultation and follow-up, we will explain when your contour can be assessed meaningfully for your specific plan.
Risks and how we plan for safety
Awake liposuction is still surgery, so a clear risk discussion matters. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists anesthesia complications, bruising, infection, fluid accumulation, changes in sensation, contour irregularity or asymmetry, poor wound healing, loose or rippling skin, blood clots and cardiopulmonary complications, injury to deeper structures, and possible revision surgery among the recognized risks.

Is awake liposuction the same as FormSculpt?
Awake liposuction is the general approach of performing liposuction with local anesthesia while you remain responsive. FormSculpt is BodyLuxe’s name for its tumescent local-anesthesia liposuction technique.
Is awake liposuction the same as FormSculpt 360?
FormSculpt 360 is one possible awake liposuction plan that treats selected areas around the midsection together. Awake liposuction can also focus on one targeted area or another group of areas.
Does awake mean no discomfort?
No. You may feel pressure, movement or discomfort even when the area is numb. We will explain how numbing, comfort, monitoring and unexpected discomfort are handled in your plan.
Does local anesthesia automatically carry fewer risks than general anesthesia?
Not automatically. Local and general anesthesia have different benefits, limitations and risks. The procedure, your health, the planned scope and clinical judgment all matter.
